Wildflowers
19th December 2010 - 9th January 2011

The work amassed for the Wildflowers exhibition is reflective of wide-ranging concerns…time travel, working with the space between two positions, the making of mountains…real or imaginary, the act of throwing things and in the case of this exhibition giving light to a series of six paintings by offering them a stay of execution and exhibiting them in a darkened basement room. In conjunction with previous work (rarely seen out of the artist’s studio); Wildflowers contains several new works produced specifically for the exhibition. In October 2010 I covertly installed twenty public orders around the City of Nottingham; giving notice of some proposed structural changes to the City. ‘City Planning’ (2010) is the re-imagining of place, through the relocating, the demolishing and the rebuilding of a city. To accompany this work (installed in a former changing room) is an archive box containing facsimiles for the notices and the photographs; accompanying these is a series of A3 maps and a 20pg booklet (the essay can be read elsewhere on this site – see City Planning page). Additionally another new work made on site, ‘Speaking in Tongues’ is a series of works that involves throwing wet clay against a wall. The Wildflowers exhibition will present (for the first time) the framed drawings for ‘Considering Venus’ three physically challenging drawings made in response to Velazquez’s Rokeby Venus.

‘Wildflowers’ was my first solo show in about Ten Years (if one does not include my Metahang exhibition at Nottingham Castle...in that show all the paintings turned to face the wall were not my own!).
